Some reports this fine morning that Valencia are wanting to pick up a costa! Maybe it’s time for us to use him as part ex for either Soler or Guedes?

Not a bad shout, Me. Wolves strongly rumoured to be after Guedes - unsurprisingly 🇵🇹. Out of those two, I’d take Soler, as can play left, right or central midfield and seems to be able and willing to put a shift in defensively too.

Agreed Clue, soler does look a more Bielsa type player and would certainly fill a few gaps.

Just let them have him and get him off the wage bill. Waste of money.

To be fair Alf, he actually started last season quite well - with an assist at Anfield and a brace of goals v Fulham. Unfortunately, Costa seems to have significant confidence issue. It looks like as soon as it became clear how good Raphinha was, and that Bielsa maybe saw him and Harrison as preferred starters, Costa’s form seemed to drop.

It did look like his form was perhaps picking up towards the end of the season, in what was our supposedly our most difficult run of fixtures - don’t forget, he played 90 minutes in our 10-man win at Citeh. It was very unfortunate for him that Wan-Bissaka pulled that back-breaker wrestling move on him which ruled him out for the rest of the season.

He plays ok when it's sunny Clu but can't be bothered any other time.

I’m sorry, but that’s a very simplistic way of looking at things Alf. Yes, he hasn’t delivered consistently to the level required, and it probably would be best if he had a fresh start in a league in which he might flourish, like La Liga. However, I feel it is unfair to say he can’t be bothered.

Costa is a fine player attacking wise but is similar to Cooper at this level. He's error prone and those errors normally result in danger for our defence. He doesn't track back like the rest of the team but he is a decent footballer. For a top 10 budding top 6 PL side like us, he's either a squad member or you sell him to a newly promoted PL side or abroad. There's no need to berate him since his contribution was still reasonable. I can see us selling him in the next few weeks to balance the books.

I agree with George. We cannot understate how important Costa was for us getting promoted. Personally I don’t like him for Bielsa’s system; it doesn’t play to his strengths. He runs back to help defend but often doesn’t get tight enough to stop the cross. He would suit a team that has a solid disciplined back 7 and a more free attacking 4. He would then be able to use his pace on the break to exploit space. There would be lots of championship clubs that would love to have him.

George and Ali - you’re absolutely right on Costa. Glad that others have noted that he does actually put a shift in, though unfortunately not best suited for Bielsa’s team setup.

With his lighter build he is probably better suited to the Spanish game. In the Championship, particularly with Wolves, he was able to get away with this with his pace and abilities on the ball, but in the Prem where the physicality remains and teams defensive abilities are higher, he is perhaps less able to have a consistent impact. So for his sake I hope he gets a move to Spain, and that his fairly recent declaration for Angola, his country of birth, helps him get opportunities on the international front too.
