Competent defender played for Sweden at every level had nasty injury and been out for a while well worth a chance for free.

Sorry but I think Ekstrand would be a bad signing not because of his talent but because for his injury history. A weak unstable knee makes him extremely vulnerable to getting caught out on the turn and as a CB that's not good for the team.

I remember a guy called Paul McGrath had 2 dodgy knees and couldn't even train . He was alright only joking he was a legend.

Paul McGrath just like Ledley King were great players when fit. However they had very different injuries and operations. Meniscal/ cartilage injuries and early onset osteoarthritis (McGrath and King) and very different to anterior crucial element ligament rupture. First of all the time out of the game is massively different 6-8 weeks and 12-18 months respectively. Secondly cruciate injuries leaves greater physical instability of the knee and bring psychological effects with it. Thirdly a cruciate ligament reconstruction will affect a players ability to kick a ball with power (depending on which side is affected) . So I'm sceptical about not just Ekstrand but any player which an ACL rupture (including max gradel! )
