Well we have lost a few of our old guard in the last few years and now Bobby Charlton is gone. It is the end of a long lost era. These guys played and celebrated with an air of humility which is sadly lacking in todays "stars".

It seems every goal is celebrated by show boating to the crowd with cringe inducing love ins at the corner flag. The aggressive screaming and shouting at every conceived minor infraction is sickening. ( did anybody watch any of the rugby World Cup - no arguing, player turned and left field when sent off - ref treated with respect) The players ( for the most part) used to be one of us .

The use of VAR is ruining the game. Let's stop the game because the guy in seat 2 row j has a headache and needs medical help. The manager prowling his technical area micro managing every kick and protesting endlessly to the . The always pristine playing surface takes away so much. - I am somewhat disillusioned, the game of my youth has changed beyond all recognition - and it's not for the better.

RIP my heroes from the 60s and 70s, I look forward to seeing you again in the not too distant future!

Agreed loved the 1960s and 1970s .

As for VAR I initially thought it would vastly improve, eradicate ref mistake/ injustices. I was wrong.

VAR is [has? ] destroying the game. I hate it. I hate the whole re-reffing the game every few minutes. I agree re era's of football; the 60's and the 70's were [in my lifetime anyway] the real game. Though it should be remembered the misery of hooliganism during those times. I always think that the current game is under the stewardship of the prevailing players, managers and refs.

This era will be known for players covered in meaningless tattoo's, designer underpants and apparently all being catholic [judging by the number signing the cross 20 x a game], grossly over-paid [abhorrent sums involved], basically who thrive in feigning injuries, conning and cheating. The game has become a non-contact sport, where refs think every tackle is a foul and every foul is a caution; refs that think they are the centre of attention and the reason we all turn up to watch. "Successful" managers who think they are the greatest whoever lived just because they have access to $B's to spend. An era where the cups are under-valued and basically to allow weak-managers to deal with their moaning bench warmers.

Var is the is the final nail in the coffin in my opinion. Also, there is far too much of it on television.

Isn't it refreshing to have the spontaneity of the championship. A goal is a goal or not in a micro-second; a quick glance at the linesman's and off we go; regardless of the instant decision, it's accepted and the game moves on.

Totally agree 70 esp the referee respect. There are mny laws that can be adopted from Rugby and respect for the referee can be one of them. It was attempted a few years ago, I seem to remember, but then quickly dropped. Any abuse, verbal or physical, of the referee should be punished either with a free kick or the movement of a free kick 10 yards in any direction. Constant harrasment by one player in particular would see that player sin-binned with an "orange" card. There would be, initially, a plethora of cards. The press and authorities must accept this but soon it will sink in and attitudes will change.

Absolutely leo,
The only person to speak to the ref should be the captain unless ref needs to speak to any player. Also i think that the ref should go into each dressing room before the game and inform both sides that any form of abuse will result in an immediate booking. Yes there maybe loads of yellow and red cards, but think it would soon sink in to improve their behaviour and respect. Then and only then will it filter down to lower leagues and kids learning the game.
Well i can wish anyway!
Baz.

Good post ani. Lots of food for thought. I guess the rich guys saw the following that some clubs have and decided better than shares. It’s the way of the world. I enjoyed the mud slide of jan fa cup too.
But days gone by.
But every failed penalty or offside appeal for Leeds screams out for var.
Rutter v Plymouth x 2.
It’s always human error. Not the software. Humans design it. And the margins are so minute it gets designed wrong.
I think we need to stop being minuscule. Penalty if it would have knocked a normal guy over. Not whisper. Offside if whole body offside.
Anyway. Up at 6. Night night guys ?
Said my piece.

It's not just a problem on the pitch, it's a problem with the game in general. Players started demanding more money, when they realized that they are stars - just like in Holywood. They are running the show and they have gotten away with it and respect nothing because they are right, they are the star of the show and everyone else is wrong and they can do what ever they want . The clubs fine them for misconduct, the league fines teams for misconduct which amounts to a rounding error. The only way to stop the abuse and disrespect of the officiating team is to make them pay, either open the mics and let the world hear what they say to the refs (we already know as we can all read lips) , make the fines more than a hours pay - how about 4 months pay and increase the yellows for disrespect. As far as VAR goes, it either goes away or becomes like Rugby .
As they say Rugby is a hooligans game played by gentlemen, Soccer is a gentleman's game played by hooligans.
