Like the time wasting rules. Is it technology or does ref have to count? Would be great if a buzzer went off telling ref the goalie has had the ball too long, or free kick or throw in.

Not sure if that’s technically possible but if it is, should be used in prem. Would rule out bias. Might being stupid here. I just don’t know how it works.

It matters less how it works than if the players think it does. Once the possibility gets into their heads, they'll react accordingly and change their behaviour.

If itk is correct and we are looking good on Brandt and Wilson and the Southampton geezer comes in. I reckon that’s a good start. Wilson a starter, and the other two worthy cover. Gives us more depth. Leaves us enough coin to buy big on striker and get decent gk in if Darlow goes to the dark side.

As I said on discussion page. Think we need to unload as much deadwood as possible and Struik, James, Gnonto and Arrenson. Keep large.
It has once again been rumoured that Sir Garner wants 442 next season.

Think Brandt would start in the middle, and Wilson Rhs. Dunno much about the Southampton kid tbh, but if we are in fir him, then on recent track record, he's worth having.
Will wait and see who leaves, but there's a lot of possible outgoings for sure!

Brandt and Wilson will do for me!

Great to have a lady football pundit who came across well and knew what she was talking about. Ellen White by the way. She done this evening's Sweden Holland game.

20 Jun 2026 21:44:11
Yeah, she talks sense when I've listened to her.

Did Ellen pick up today on Sweden's defensive failings, including, regrettably at times, our own Gabi not tracking back effectively, not really stopping crosses effectively, that led to some of the goals for Holland?

Said it before, but Gabi imo is somewhat of a weak link defensively at LB / LWB for Leeds United, and today for Sweden.

He's no Cooper or Dorigo, that's for sure.

I like Gabby, but he did have a bad game tonight. He did have Dutch players doubling up on him a lot of the time, which was tough for any full back to handle, but could have done better.

Also relating to that game, why did we spend ages on what everyone could see was going to be a fruitless pursuit of Strand Larsen in last summer's transfer window, when we could have landed Brobbey for half the price before Sunderland snuck in and signed him at almost the last minute?

If full backs stopped crosses into the box, then there would be no crosses into the box. It's silly when people say a FB should stop the crosses.

Come off it, Corkey. Blocking crosses is, and should be, a big part of defending.

Mastering blocking crosses is all about aggressive positioning, closing down the winger, reading the game and sharp footwork.

You're more than old enough to have watched Tony Dorigo; he was the blooming master of blocking crosses!

Let me display my ignorance by asking, what's the point of a defender taking a goal kick by passing to the goalie who hoofs it upfield?

20 Jun 2026 18:54:33
All I can think is, with defender being there, the other team stay forward to press, creating more space for where the keeper passes to.

Something that concerns me about World Cup final tournaments is the inexperience levels of some of the officials. Take a match between two teams chock full of players taken from the big leagues of Europe and South America, and put it in the control of a ref from Jamaica or New Zealand or Jordan, and they'll be totally unaware of the dark arts and gamesmanship they'll have to deal with.

I spotted a couple of incidents in the Morocco v Scotland game which the Uzbek ref let go where a more experienced official might have given at least a free kick, maybe even a yellow card. I don't think they affected the result, but they could have done. When/ if we reach the knockout phase I'll always be happier to have a German or Italian ref rather than a Jordanian or Jamaican.

I had a laugh at two female fourth officials trying to figure out how the sub board worked in the Scotland game. Hilarious.

I guess you didn't find it funny in the Brazil game when the men struggled with it, Aus?

3

20 Jun 2026 13:55:23
To be honest, whilst I agree there have been a couple of questionable decisions, I have preferred the level and method of refereeing far more than any given weekend in the EPL.

It's been a breath of fresh air v the constant stop start crap we get most weekends.

Has anyone else appreciated the new medical breakthrough rendering near-death injuries fully cured in a few seconds; who knew, all it needed, was the referee ignoring you and / or the imminent prospect of the trainer coming on [and a minute of the side-lines].

Even VAR has almost become workable [I hate VAR].

Yeah I did ani. Did you find it funny the women struggling? Or just the men?

20 Jun 2026 14:50:40
Second post, I agree with Ani 100%.
Think there has been less diving, there has also been less staying down if no whistle. If I heard correctly, if a trainer comes on, it's minimum 30 sec on the sideline before the player can come back on.
Think the second round has been a lot dirtier and nigglier than the first round.

USA, Aus and Paraguay, Turk, were very niggly.
I don't get it, also. Not a corner, penalty or anything serious. When has a ref ever changed their mind on a simple free kick? Why challenge it? Also, I didn't like the Mexican manager saying the player dived. Not etiquette.
More to come.

Just watched the Scotland v Morocco match, and Scotland did better than I anticipated only losing 1:0 - I thought they'd probably lose 2:0 or 3:0. I thought the decision not to give them a pen was correct.

20 Jun 2026 09:58:40
Scotland did not embarrass themselves, to be honest. I was expecting them to get trounced v Morocco. If they beat Brazil they are through. 😂👍

20 Jun 2026 10:45:01
Having already got 3 pts on the board, they still have a (small) chance of going through as one of the 8 best 3rd place teams.

20 Jun 2026 10:59:44
Thought they fought hard. Being polite, I thought McGinn and McTominay were looking for pens. I wish they'd been a bit braver earlier in the game.

Let's not pussyfoot about it, Scotland, we're s****!
My m8 Traff, who takes me to church, is a big Scotland fan .. not even Scottish lol.
Personally thought Morocco would batter them!

That's some stadium tonight! Seattle was always known as the best in the USA.

My mother is from a small city a little east of Seattle, so I've been through a lot en route. It's a lovely city and stadium.

When it's not raining - lol.

I went to Seattle years ago. Hated it. Felt unsafe and slummy. My ma and pa liked it. Never understood why. Stadium looked awesome though.
