Leeds keeper making more mistakes we definitely need a replacement.

I haven't seen Wales match, Whitey...

But Darlow's been very good this season.

And he is the exception to the rule of utterly appalling Leeds United recruitment of goalkeepers in past 8 years or so.

Step forward the horror 5.

Perri
Meslier
Kiko
Klaessen
Wieldwald

Be careful what you wish for, Whitey.

James Milner retiring at the age of 40. Seems like only yesterday we saw him scoring at ER at the age of 16 to become (at the time) the youngest goalscorer in the PL. Very well done that man. πŸ˜€.

7

02 Jun 2026 13:50:50
Yep, that superb EPL goal for Leeds vs Chelsea at 16 is forever in one's memory. He scored other good goals for Leeds too.

Well done to James on a superb 24 year footie career.

4

02 Jun 2026 14:06:06
100% would have loved to see him play for us, then retire. Shame we couldn't get him. Top, top bloke.

4

02 Jun 2026 14:06:32
Agree. Played the game 100% the way it should be played. 100% throttle and passion. Enjoy retirement Mr Milner.

4

02 Jun 2026 14:45:42
While a top player and professional, I never got the whole James Milner thing, that he should come back to Leeds United to see out his days. Don't think he even played fifty games for us?

2

02 Jun 2026 15:56:17
Yep, Corkey, 100.

Milner coming back would not have been anywhere near as euphoric as, say, when the marvellous David Batty came back to Leeds.

..and Batts had 2 long spells with Leeds.

2

02 Jun 2026 20:25:06
I suppose it was because he was a local lad, Corkey, and allegedly a Leeds fan, but he couldn't wait to see the back of us, and certainly never showed willing to pitch in and help us in our darker years, so I don't see him through the same rose tinted glasses as some seem to do.

Fair enough, he wanted a career at the highest level, but ultimately he chose that over us even at the end of his career, so we can't have meant that much to him.

2

02 Jun 2026 22:56:10
The consummate professional. Well done James. Happy retirement.

02 Jun 2026 23:12:43
Alfonzo... James Milner, though, was/is defo a Leeds United fan.

As I saw interviews by Klopp, (or maybe it was Pep), when the great Bielsa's Leeds United were due to play Liverpool or Citeh in 2020/21 season, James Milner had always been banging on to them about the Super Leeds United.

New information released about Southampton's spygate saga reveal the extent of involvement within the club and the lengths the manager and others would go to in order to gain a perceived advantage.
Undue pressure was put on junior staff, disguises were used including wearing Eastleigh kit and evidence was deleted.
The Club and individuals consistently lied - denied that the manager and senior staff knew about it, said no footage was taken or distributed and was not used in the preparation for matches and also said, untruthfully, that they were unaware it was against the regulations.

It was summed up by the commission's comment that it was "unimpressed by some of the club's witnesses, including Eckert".
The decision to expel was taken on the grounds that public confidence and the integrity of the competition would be seriously diminished if a non sporting sanction such as a fine was the outcome.
Probably still more to come once the investigation into the conduct of Southampton staff is completed. Although the club's Chairman has today said he stands behind his manager and wants him to stay, in the end it may not be his decision.

5

02 Jun 2026 10:38:59
And....?

2

02 Jun 2026 10:57:54
....They got what they deserved. Shame the Premier League can't take the same line with any sense of urgency.

3

02 Jun 2026 11:12:42
There's a good chance that the FA will mandate a substantial suspension from football related activities for Eckert (and others) . If he gets a 12 month ban (possible) , they're going to have to find a replacement, like it or not.

4

02 Jun 2026 14:10:29
Perhaps, the FA will face its own internal inquiry into the unjust disadvantages Leeds United have received from referees in their decisions, which is clear for all to see.

4

02 Jun 2026 15:58:18
What Whitey said.
If only that would blooming happen.

Football needs an independent body to monitor / regulate the FA and EPL.

2

01 Jun 2026 20:29:58
Probably not gonna happen, but I’d love us to go for Trossard from Arsenal. He may be 30 odd, but still has loads to offer, and if he’s available for 20 mill ish, we should move in.

5

01 Jun 2026 22:09:15
Would like him, but more chance of me signing for Leeds, I reckon, Corkey.

Trossard 25/26.
31 appearances, 6 goals, 6 assists.
An integral part of Gooners' squad, for sure.

5

01 Jun 2026 23:07:53
I think he'll be far less effective next season if he stays. He'll be like when Joe Cole left Chelsea or Freddie Ljungberg left Arsenal. The big clubs let those two go at exactly the right times.

1

01 Jun 2026 23:35:58
What, like when big club Man U let go of allegedly 'past it' 31-year-old Gordon Strachan to Leeds United?

Yep, Strachan then went on to play the best football of his career, and was so effective he, along with Sgt Wilko, awakened the Leeds United Phoenix from the bottom of Division 2 ashes.

To win 3 trophies in 3 seasons, including Division 1 League Champions ahead of Fergie's Man United.

Man, that was 😊 joyous for Strachan over Fergie.

6

02 Jun 2026 01:26:31
That same Man U let Johnny Giles, one of the most outstanding players of his generation, come to Leeds at the age of 23. He promised Matt Busby's wife that he'd come back and haunt him. He went on to make 527 appearances for Leeds United over 12 years.

5

02 Jun 2026 12:06:56
In a similar vein, someone has recommended Pitch Invasion, a three part documentary about the influence of the Scots and Irish on English football. There might be a lot of red shirts on view ( 😬 ) , but episode 2 has a few minutes about Leeds in the 70's.

4

02 Jun 2026 13:58:42
Interesting post, Dune.

From the 60s and 70s, Leeds United had plenty of Scots internationals.

Bobby Collins
Billy Bremner
Eddie Gray
Peter Lorimer
Frankie Gray
David Harvey
David Stewart
Joe Jordan
Gordon McQueen
Arthur Graham
Derek Parlane

Eleven internationals.

4

02 Jun 2026 14:42:00
Throughout the 60s and 70s, I used to cheer on the Scots teams because so many of them were Leeds United players, and it really p. me off (still does) all the Jocks cheering for whoever England were playing. Nowadays I do what they do and cheer the opposition. Still cheer for Wales though - at least for now.

02 Jun 2026 15:54:36
My concerns about Trossard stem largely from an age (like Strachan admittedly) perspective, and thus the lack of a sell on value.

As a winger or wide forward though, I reconsider; he could work. His wide work isn't based too heavily on pace, more so his technical ability and IQ, so it definitely could work.

300K for Strachan definitely was a big amount in the 2nd division when we signed him (before my time) . Just feels like Β£20m is a lot for a guy who probably wouldn't offer the leadership or sell-on value (maybe we don't need a Strachan-like leader) .

You'd always take that attribute, but it's arguable that Ampadu, Rodon, etc bring that 'style' of modern leadership.

I just hated when we signed Rodrigo for so much money and then sold him for Β£3m, admittedly a relegation clause, but I imagine at 32 we wouldn't have got much more for him.

I'm not averse to signing veterans and quality when we need it, but signing a 31 year old for Β£20m is a lot to stomach. If he signs and turns into the next Pablo, I would love it though!

2

02 Jun 2026 16:06:00
Good follow up post, Ealing.

300k for Strachan turned out to be an absolute blooming bargain.

We also bought Lee Chapman from Forest for Β£400k. Another absolute bargain. He scored a lot of goals for Leeds.

As for a Pabloesque player..

What about Pablo as Leeds United manager, to replace Farke at some point?

Pablo has been doing sensationally well at Castellon.

JR, indeed, the Scots always cheer on our opponents every time.

So likewise, for me, it's always been.

Abs. Anyone but Scotland.

Even in the 1974 World Cup finals, when Scotland had Six Leeds United players in their squad, I was still cheering on their opponents. πŸ˜†

2

02 Jun 2026 22:52:16
I could be wrong, because it's a long time ago, but my first kit was a Scotland jersey in 1982 or maybe it was 78. Basically, because Scotland had so many Leeds players and England had Trevor Cherry!!

0

02 Jun 2026 23:14:56
What the heck, Corkey... a Scottish jersey.

If it was 1978... you still had current Leeds players Allan Clarke, Tony Currie, Paul Reaney, Paul Madeley and Trevor Cherry, who had played for England.

The summer transfer window opens on Mon June 15th and closes on Tues September 1st, but why?
The season ended on Saturday night with the Champions League final so there's no reason why the window should not be open now - in fact negotiations are already taking place, but just cannot be finalised for another 2 weeks. Then the 26/7 season will kick off in mid August (Aug 17th last year) , but clubs face having their preparations into disarray by losing key players up to the window closing 2 weeks later.

The window should open the day after the last match of the old season and close the day before the first match of the new season - how hard can it be?

6

01 Jun 2026 14:59:40
Hear, hear JR.
Baz does lurve logical proposals.
Sadly, though, far too sensible, fair and logical for the rarely fit for purpose FA, EPL etc.

2

01 Jun 2026 17:26:01
I mean, deals can be done and signed now.

1

01 Jun 2026 17:45:37
How will the new financial rules affect our ability to stay up?

2

01 Jun 2026 18:06:33
Spot on, JR!

1

01 Jun 2026 19:57:45
The issue is you need every country to agree when to close the window, and they don't all start on the same day. If we close two weeks earlier than everybody else, you run the risk of having star players unsettled and then sold without being able to replace them.

I agree, though in principle, that it would be best that the window closes before the first game!

1

01 Jun 2026 22:56:49
I don't think we need to be concerned at what other countries do. We simply choose start and finish dates to suit ourselves, and then stipulate that no transfers to or from English clubs can take place outside those dates "in or out".

If, say, other countries choose to have a finish date later than ours, English clubs will not be permitted to sell to them after our chosen end date. How difficult is that?

3

01 Jun 2026 23:38:53
What JR exactly said.
It's not rocket science fgs.
Our leagues determine deadline dates for buying and selling our players.

3

02 Jun 2026 07:22:14
But it's an ecosystem. Lots of transfers depend on others happening. We might want to sign a player in Germany, but he can't move until they've secured a replacement (from say Spain) , who won't move until they've got a replacement. If all the clubs in the chain have two weeks longer to sign a player than we have, we don't get our player, and he goes somewhere else, and all other transfers in the chain go fine.

It's just not really practical without putting English teams at a disadvantage.

https://liverpool-rumours.co.uk/uploads/thumb_Ed001.png avatar{Ed001's Note - the best way to do it is to get rid of the windows altogether, like we used to have until recently. The only clubs who benefit from this system are the bigger ones who can stockpile players. It also makes it much harder for young players to come through, clubs can't afford to take a chance on leaving a gap for them, in case they flop. So instead they buy extra players to cover for injuries. If there is no window, you can leave space in the squad for the youngsters to get a chance and then buy if they are not working out after being given a run.

It is very telling that the teams that rely heavily on their academies, such as Crewe, dropped right down the leagues the moment the window system was brought in. It is silly as it was an Italian idea and about corruption anyway. They like it in place as the smaller clubs borrow players from the bigger clubs to plug holes in their squad, then those bigger clubs lean on them for 'favours' later.}

3

02 Jun 2026 10:32:04
Agreed Ed, better if everyone does it at the same time (or at least all the "big" leagues) . I'd also like to see some measure to stop the rich clubs "stockpiling" players but not sure what as yet. I hear what you say about the effect on clubs like Crewe that rely on their academies, but no window at all would see those same rich clubs snatching key players from ambitious up and coming clubs (like us) mid season - how long would we have retained Raphina with no window in place? If he'd been at Crewe they'd have been happy to sell, us less so.

0

https://liverpool-rumours.co.uk/uploads/thumb_Ed001.png avatar{Ed001's Note - yes but that money would be coming in midseason, after you had the benefit of them playing and then sell at their peak price. Whereas with windows you are limited to when you can sell them, which can mean value dips.}

0

02 Jun 2026 12:14:29
But what if you do not want to sell your best players mid-season and thus destroy your own chances of winning promotion or avoiding relegation or qualifying for Europe, etc. etc?

0

https://liverpool-rumours.co.uk/uploads/thumb_Ed001.png avatar{Ed001's Note - same problem as there is now though really, but you can always promise to sell them the moment you have achieved your aims. Also, the chances are that you would have had to sell them before the season started or in January otherwise.}

0

02 Jun 2026 14:30:05
Promising to sell them the moment you've achieved your aims would not be an issue, neither would selling them before the season started or in January. However, if it's mid April and you're in 17th place, desperately trying to avoid relegation, and only kept afloat by the achievements of your leading striker, and a club in 6-8th place sees their top man sustain a ruptured ACL, which risks them not qualifying for the CL, they could snatch your man away, thus solving their problem but condemning you to relegation.

Ok for the big money clubs, but not for the smaller fry.

Rangers and the Dutch-Belgian Squad Blueprint

{Ed's Note - EHL2020 has posted a new article entitled, Rangers and the Dutch-Belgian Squad Blueprint

I wonder if Leeds shouldn't try and appoint the recently departed Maximilian Hahn as director of football. I get we have Adam Underwood. But Hahn scouted Disasi, Diouf, Magassa, Fernandes and Taty Castellanos were mainly his signings. He left of his own accord and West Ham didn't want him gone.

4

31 May 2026 23:17:50
Well LUFC defo should be recruiting a masterly DoF (above Farke, not equal to Farke in authority like Underwood is) .

Also.

Firstly, surprised a tad that Director of Football Maxxy Hahn is only 30 years of age!
These DoF are gettin younger, it makes me feel a little old.

Secondly, what happened to the red hot insider info of a few weeks ago that Nicky Hammond was returning to Leeds United from Everton?

Thirdly, can we get a Raphinha type in this summer window please. We need some quality flair. Where's Uncle Victor when you need him!

4

01 Jun 2026 07:00:38
The Hammond thing was a rumour, I believe. I recently read a statement that 99.5% are false. Try reading a book called "The Baz Book of Likelihood", which someone rated as 10/10. πŸ˜„πŸ˜‚

8

01 Jun 2026 09:28:43
Now, now, Bright. Don't stir the beast. 84.7% sure he won't like that post.

3

01 Jun 2026 10:59:53
Dasasi is on loan, and Fernandes cost over 40 mill from Southampton, so not sure you can call him scouted.

5

01 Jun 2026 12:11:35
Haha, I actually lurve Brighty's post, Aus. ..92.5% funny.

And, the "Baz Book of Likelihood" is a good read, Brighty; ideal Christmas present.

3

01 Jun 2026 13:30:42
That's cause the 10/10 Baz.

0

01 Jun 2026 14:04:53
I would see that as fiddling around, without any clear advantage, apart from Fernandez, who wasn't cheap as Corky pointed out. Those players took West Ham down to the Championship, which I wouldn't consider myself as great recruitment.

I'd buy the Baz Book of Likelyhood. Where can you buy them? Good chuckle material for the summer.
No offense, Baz. πŸ˜‰

5

01 Jun 2026 15:03:50
OP, in all good bookshops..
Best seller section (non fiction) . Naturally.

But tell yer what, OP, especially for you, I'll send you a signed copy for your birthday. πŸŽ‚

3

01 Jun 2026 17:35:23
Knew you'd see the funny side, Baz, which is how it was intended!

2

01 Jun 2026 21:49:44
Baz, is there a sequel book maybe of Baz's Predictions/ Past, Present and Future? I'm holding out for that one especially.

3

01 Jun 2026 22:11:28
OP, not just a book sequel.

But, a forthcoming West End musical entitled 'Baz the Oracle'.

You'll love it.

2

31 May 2026 20:57:18
Konate 'deeply saddened' by Liverpool exit. If he's asked for elite money or Liverpool were playing hardball depends. If it's the former deeply saddened that a mercenary didn't get to say goodbye not having it.

4

https://liverpool-rumours.co.uk/uploads/thumb_Ed001.png avatar{Ed001's Note - he wanted over 300k a week.}

4

31 May 2026 23:19:00
Β£300k a week, nearly Β£16 million a year! Outrageous.

4

01 Jun 2026 01:21:21
A Pool friend said good riddance cos he's always got a mistake in him.

2

01 Jun 2026 07:01:36
World's gone maaaaaad!

2

01 Jun 2026 08:06:41
£300k a week for what is a bang average defender. 🀯🀯🀯🀯
I certainly wouldn't swap him for Bijol.

4

01 Jun 2026 09:31:20
Isn't Gordon getting like 425k a week at broke Barca? Just don't get it. This is serious money. Understand players should be rewarded for their hard work and dedication. But, we are talking obscene money. That's like over 4 years of my wages in a week. wtf.

1

01 Jun 2026 12:14:05
Dave, 100%.

In fact, I wouldn't swap 2026 Konate for Charlie Cresswell..

Or even a retired Liam Cooper.

4

01 Jun 2026 17:28:20
Coops is a bit of a stretch, Bazaldinho. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

2

31 May 2026 11:17:52
Arsenal had the lowest possession of a Champions League finalist, since the last time they were a Champions League finalist!

How they decided to play that way is unbelievable!

6

31 May 2026 11:55:41
Shocking, wasn't it! And I hate those stuttering run ups on penalties! It puts the player off balance more than it puts the keeper off. They deserved to lose with those tactics tho.

5

31 May 2026 12:12:31
After just winning the PL and feeling on a high, I expected Arsenal to have a real go last night, having nothing to lose. But, to play as they did in such a negative fashion, they got exactly what they deserved. Nothing.

5

31 May 2026 12:21:06
No Arsenal fan, but in 2006 you can excuse it by Lehmann being sent off, so lack of possession was then understandable.

4

31 May 2026 12:29:10
Gooners eras under Arsene Wenger, Bertie Mee and Terry Neill played mostly very attractive, entertaining football..

Not so under Georgie Graham, and even less so under Arteta.

Unpleasant, unlikeable, dull to watch, this Arteta Gonners side..

Very effective on the dark arts, set pieces.

But, in my opinion, one of the worst footballing teams to win the league title in the past 6 decades.

7

31 May 2026 12:31:13
..And still can't fathom how Farke's Leeds United rolled over not once but twice for this Gooners side.

Conceding 9 goals in 2 matches to that team was ridiculous.

Change of mentality needed.. or change of manager.

5

31 May 2026 14:15:41
That is baffling. How my dad's Gooners creamed us both times. No other team did. They slaughtered us, but hey.
He is 86 yrs old and has waited over 20 yrs for this. I'm happy for him.

3

31 May 2026 18:08:48
Arsenal have little threat up front and decided to let PSG have the ball and hope to snatch a goal from a breakaway, a set piece or one of the occasional times they had the ball in the PSG half. They are good defensively but won't be a very good team until they find a top class striker.

They've tried and paid big money but not found the answer.
In our two encounters this season with the Gunners, the players were either rabbits in the headlights or headless chickens. Those were the only two occasions when we surrendered before we walked on the pitch. Don't ask me why.
