That really was shocking - and worrying. We have no one up front to replace Bamford and no one on the pitch today to get a grip of the team. Seasoned professionals like Dallas and Ayling should have been playing. Why take Poveda off and leave Costa on? Casilla - dear me - £40k a week but we can't shift him.

Richie 1971 I was certainly one of those people calling for the whole U23 side. Alf’s already made the point that they would have a far better understanding of each other’s play than the very mixed hybrid we put out today.

I’m not saying we would have done any better, no team would with casilla and his wafer wrists.

But Villa under 23 gave Liverpool a game lost 4-1 but learnt a lot i’m sure our u23s thrashed that Villa team 3-2 this year and sit ten or so places above them in prem 2

So if I had a time machine (this year) i’d still play out complete U23s Geldhsrt Caprile et al.
