The United retained list has several players who they are in discussions with regarding extending their contracts. Amps, who has signed, and Pascal were not mentioned. The ones who were are Darlow, Cairns and Byram. I can understand the two keepers but Byram? Does that mean we're hoping not to have to sign an additional FB?

They may be talking to him about a combined role with coaching, and keeping his registration as a player, just in case we have a bad time with injuries? Other than that, guess I ain't got a clue!

Byram being retained for another year isn't that surprising.
What is surprising is why our owners/management sold Summerville for just £25 million, without, it seems, a sell-on clause or any add-ons at all.

How long was left on his contract?

Summerville had 2 years left on his contract .. till 2026 (he left in summer 2024) .

I think Man United would be taking a big risk to pay 50 Mil for Summerville. In fact, if they do manage to get him, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a much smaller amount. West Ham are not in a bargaining position.
Not only that, Summerville has only been impressive in the Premiership since January, and that's it. Is he going to be consistent with that in a high pressure team like Man U?

I would be a tad surprised if Man U signed Summerville. I rate Summerville, but not sure he is a UCL-level player. But he has broken into the Dutch team, to be fair, and defo EPL-level class.
The point is, why did master of deals (in his sleep) , Paraag Marathe and Co. very disappointingly and surprisingly fail to get a sell-on clause and any add-ons on Summerville in the 2024 lowish-fee sale.

Personally, I believe Cree will only get better, but yeah, 50m is way OTT. I see Van Hecke is off to Spuds for 52m, that said!

Agree Bright, re Byram. No cost apart from his wages, and he was seemingly well liked and a bit of a calming influence in the dressing room last season.

Like, West Ham are now, as a relegated team, a side with little to bargain with. Jimmy was never going to stay with us in the Championship, so the club got what they could for him, and I imagine sell-on clauses were something West Ham would not consider in the deal.
Being relegated is no fun, your best assets will very likely be sold. I thought we did reasonably well with the sales of Cree and Rutter, especially with Archie. It’s a shame we lost them, but that’s the price you pay.

What is surprising is Byram is on nearly double Gruev's wage! Longstaff, the second-highest earner, is on over 80k a week!
Bournaw on the same wage as Stach?

Exactly as OP said - we weren't in a position to bargain. We needed the money to be compliant with PSR and we had a player who didn't want to play for us - probably a player who we had promised would be allowed a move that window.
