I take my name from the comic strip 'Tough of the Track' where Alf Tupper would regularly run 'the toffs' on the mile. I don't think they elaborated on the full name, so don't know if it was Alfred or just Alf. Surely, some of you older chaps remember the Greystone Harriers man?

Remember fondly the Alf Tupper comic stories.

Blame my predictive text, Alf, as my father was Alfred, but hated his name, and insisted people call him John, his middle name, for the majority of his life.

Who would have thought Timothy Weah would generate such an outpouring of nostalgia. Great to hear, sounds like we're all on the "Just for Men" and struggling to remember yesterday.

I remember when I was a lad, stuff. Remember when my dad gave me a three-rung ladder so I could see over the scratching shed wall in the early seventies, those were the days, my friends. MOT.

According to Wikipaedia,
"Alf Tupper was 18 years of age when he first appeared in Rover in 1949 and he continued his adventures in Victor in the early 1960s. He lived with his Aunt Meg in Anchor Alley, Greystone. The house had one room upstairs and one room downstairs; Alf's bed was a mattress on the kitchen floor.

He was employed as a welder working in Ike Smith's welding shop which was located under a railway arch. His wages were £1 5s (£1.25p) per week of which he paid his Aunt £1.2s.6d (£1.12½p) for rent. This meant he had 2/6d (12½p) for himself"

When I was 9 or 10 (circa 1958) , one could buy fish and chips for 2 from Annies Fishery in Outwood for half a crown (2/6 or 12.5p) . Happy days.
