Brighton's performances on Wednesday and today make our 1:1 draw against them at home look quite encouraging.

Agree both Brighton and Brentford results this weekend put our performances against them, and more generally in this first part of the season, into context. Agree Baz we perhaps could/should have beaten Brighton but equally I think we could/should have lost to Brentford, so 2 points from those games seems "fair”.

But our (IMO) excellent form so far really needs the cherry on the icing on the cake with a win against palace tomorrow. Then I am in dreamland.

And as Baz has said, we should have beaten them - our first half performance was excellent but simply couldn't finish off our chances.

Let's hope we can tomorrow vs the Palace.

Agree. We got away with a draw against Brentford but should have had the win against Brighton. But take the points and move on.
I think the lesson is that we need to establish ourselves as a Premier League team over a few seasons and not think we're entitled to European football within a couple of years just because we've played in European finals.

Brighton and Brentford and to a lesser extent Bournemouth have worked their way into becoming established top tier teams and we need to do the same. It's a marathon not a sprint.

Totally agree Dunelm, although our progress looks great right now, I still think there'll be some disappointing matches we'll encounter, with several Farke Out moments, but I can see positive evidence of improvement in our team.
I don't think we'll have a very stressful relegation ordeal this time, but I also don't envisage a European qualification either.

In truth we are not ready for any European football and It can be a poisoned chalice to some football clubs.

In my opinion if we can finish mid table this season I'd be totally stoked, I don't want to be the club that freakishly overachieves, this season, it will just set us up for massive expectations the following season, followed by massive disappointments the season after.
It's usually how it ends up.

Interesting listening to a Brentford supporter on 606 tonight saying that with all due respect to Watford, Burnley, WBA, etc it's the likes of Brentford, Brighton and Leeds who will become the disruptive clubs that the top six don't like and also praised Farke's contribution to United's development.


I agree OP, mid table will be fine at the end of this season. Increase the capacity at Elland Road and develop the off field commercial income and we can kick on to European football but maybe not for two or three years. We need to put in the foundations before we build the fortress.

Jaysus lads can you not show some verve for this season? Stop all the hoping for mid table nonsense and walk before you can run crap. I'm hoping for top six and I don't see why we can't. As for clubs over achieving, is there really such a thing? If say we finished 5th this season would that be overachieving? No it wouldn't.

It would mean we've had a good campaign and thoroughly deserved our finishing position.

Last time we got promoted with Marcelo we finished 9th in the league, the next season we were in a relegation battle. Blades did the same and Sunderland might go the same way this season although I don't think they will be battling relegation. For many promoted teams they can have a big bounce for one or two seasons then they suddenly are swirling around the plug hole of relegation, it also happened to the Florists more recently.

You can never predict these things it's just the way things turn out in football.
Like any football fan I certainly won't be unhappy if we achieve European football, which the media are eagerly building us up for, but you got to achieve to same or better the next season as the fans and media will expect it.

I prefer us to be below the radar and gradually build our team into a sustainable and a complete weapon of a football club in the future, bit like Brentford and Brighton are now.

So yes, it's learn to walk before you can run for me.

Overachieving happens often in football.

Can't agree OP. Where you finish in the league is where you deserve to finish.
If we were to qualify for Europe and the following season came say 16th but we won a European trophy I'd take that all day long. Aston Villa and Newcastle have shown what is possible in recent seasons after promotion.

Understood Corkey, just our differing opinions.
Winning a trophy is what football is all about, I feel building a squad with depth and quality with time, can give a club a better chance to deal with the Premiership and European football in the same season.


It's arguable that Villa and Newcastle have overspent, they got European football but at a cost of losing their best players to balance their accounts.
They are not role model clubs for me.
